The Portfolio Committee on Labour has voiced its satisfaction with the success of the Western Cape leg of the public hearings on a national minimum wage.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Lumka Yengeni, said the Committee was particularly happy with how workers had contributed to discussions. “This is the kind of input the Committee expected and will expect going forward. People have raised concerns about the work place and complaints about how they are treated,” Ms Yengeni said.
The Committee began the public hearings on the national minimum wage following President Jacob Zuma’s call during his 2014 State of the Nation address for an investigation into issues around the implementation of a national minimum wage.
Farm workers and domestic workers turned out in good numbers in both the Gugulethu and Paarl hearings to voice their opinions on the matter. Ms Yengeni welcomed their contributions. “The issues and concerns raised are critical, and will certainly assist the Committee,” she said.
The Committee will hold public hearings on the national minimum wage in all provinces.
