Parliament on safety plan for police officers

Police Committee to scrutinise safety plan for officers

The Portfolio Committee on Police will, this coming Friday (28 August 2015), scrutinise SAPS strategy on safety and prevention of police killings.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman, says killing of police officers in this country has reached intolerable proportions and that any strategy intended to curb this, needs to focus more on preventative measures rather than reactive.

Mr Beukman said the brazen shootings and killings of police, such as this weekend’s incidents which claimed and injured officers in Gauteng, require SAPS to come up with a revised strategy that contains more effective measures aimed at protecting the lives of each and every police man and woman. “It is important for our police officers to know that their lives are taken serious and are safeguarded so that they execute their duties without any fear of losing their lives or being attacked,” said Mr Beukman.

Earlier this year, SAPS, tabled a strategy on how it intends combating police killings but Committee members expressed concern with some of the measures the earlier strategy contained and resolved that a more comprehensive strategy focusing on technological measures be tabled again, hence this Friday’s meeting.

The Committee also wishes to send its heartfelt condolences to the families of the police officers who died this weekend and wishes a speedy recovery to officers still in hospital.

The meeting is scheduled for Friday, 28 August 2015 in Committee Room S26, NCOP building from 09h00.
