Parliament saddened by passing of musician David Masondo

A giant baobab of South African traditional music has fallen

The Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture is saddened by reports of the passing of the legendary South African musician Mr David Masondo. The sad passing of Mr Masondo has robbed the country of a stalwart of pure South African Music.

Mr Masondo, the lead singer of mbaqanga group Soul Brothers, was among the pioneers of a true African sound. “It is through legends such as Mr Masondo that we got to celebrate the fullness and wealth of music through the African language. The Committee is comforted by the fact that he was doing what he loved best when he fell sick leading to his hospitalisation and untimely death,” said Mr Jabulani Mahlangu, the Whip of the Committee.

The Committee reiterates its call for increased exposure of local music, especially traditional music on major broadcasters. The Committee believes that this will assist with instilling pride in our languages and cultures, especially to the younger generation.

The Committee extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr Masondo’s family and friends, his group and South African music lovers in general.
