Parliament saddened by passing of Mr Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim

The Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former deputy minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim.

“Mr Ebrahim was selfless, courageous and a revolutionary. At the tender age of 12, he joined the Natal Indian Youth Congress as an anti-apartheid campaigner, where he distributed pamphlets and joined in the anti-apartheid protests. He then joined the African National Congress and was instrumental in the formation of the Umkhonto We Sizwe branch in Natal, now KwaZulu-Natal,” said the committee Chairperson, Mr Supra Mahumapelo.

“Mr Ebrahim, along with many others of his time, made tremendous sacrifices. He was twice charged for treason, and the first time he was sentenced and imprisoned for 15 years on Robben Island. It was not long after he was released that he was charged and imprisoned again on Robben Island. He fought tirelessly to end apartheid in South Africa and to emancipate us. Today we honour a great man, a man of valour, a veteran of the African National Congress, who has served his country well,” the Chairperson continued.

The committee sends their heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs Shannon Ebrahim, his children, other family members and comrades.
