Parliament on road safety during Easter weekend

Road safety a collective responsibility, says Committee Chair

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Ms Dikeledi Magadzi, has wished people travelling on South African roads a safe and secure Easter weekend.

Ms Magadzi called on motorists to be cautious and ensure the safety of other road users. She said road safety was a collective responsibility. “The Committee is satisfied with all the road safety campaigns and supports the view that they should be enhanced,” she said.

“The piece of legislation calling for a total ban on liquor for drivers should be expedited. Until South Africa registers a zero number of road fatalities, officials and law enforcements should spare no effort in eliminating deaths,” she said.

Last year, 148 deaths were recorded on South Africa’s roads during the Easter weekend. Ms Magadzi said visible traffic policing on the roads from Cape Town to Limpopo is vital for road safety, and that the Arrive Alive Campaign should be enhanced.
