Moloto Road activists’ comment saddens committee
The Portfolio Committee on Transport is saddened by utterances and the attitude of the Moloto Road activists following a fruitful meeting in Parliament on Tuesday.
The Mpumalanga Transport Steering Committee came to Parliament to complain that there was no progress on the Moloto Rail Corridor, and that the kind of service Mpumalanga people received from Putco Bus Services was below standard. The steering committee pleaded for intervention of the Portfolio Committee.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Dikeledi Magadzi, said the Committee held all South Africans in high regard, and was committed to ensuring quality services to the people.
“Detailed plans on the improvement of the Moloto Road are there and the Steering Committee is aware. They indicated that they had been made aware, from meetings with the national department, of the plan on the rail project,” Ms Magadzi said.
The Committee resolved a while back that the Moloto Rail Project be a standing agenda item on all its meetings, where progress report on the project will be tabled.
Ms Magadzi said Parliament and government will never take people for fools as suggested by the Steering Committee. “The Committee has a duty to ensure that government delivers on the mandate and, this, the Committee will do without fail. To suggest nothing is being done or people are being fooled is mischievous,” she said.
“Things are not happening at the pace people are looking for as a result of negotiations that government had to enter into in order to acquire land, as the road cuts through farms.”
Subsequent to the meeting the steering committee wrote the Committee a letter accusing it of taking people as fools.
