Parliament postpones public hearings on land ownership in Rustenburg

Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings postpones public hearings

The Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings, after having met with the petitioners (Bafokeng Local Buyers Association) in Rustenburg, has agreed to postpone the public hearings which were scheduled for today and tomorrow.

The decision to defer the hearings arose from an understanding that there were outstanding documents which contained critical information on the matter which would help the Committee to develop a process plan on how to effectively deal with all issues contained in petition.

The petition that was submitted to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) by the Bafokeng Local Buyers Association (BLBA) in 2008 contained among other things, a contention of land ownership issues, as well as allegations of misuse of mining royalties by the Bafokeng Tribal Council and Bafokeng Royal Family.  BLBA consists of communities along North West’s platinum belt, such as Baphiring, Motlhabe, Bakubung, Bakgatla Ba Kgafela, Raphafana, Matebele Ba Chaneng, Lefarakgatle and Marikana.

The new date for the continuation of the hearings would be announced in due course.
