National Assembly questions for oral replies from the President proceeds as scheduled
Political parties in the National Assembly (NA) today indicated their determination to ensure Parliament regains its decorum and that the degeneration of sittings to the point where they have to be adjourned should not recur.
The business of the House for today – the President’s answering Members’ questions for oral reply – was completed as scheduled. This was despite expectations from a number of commentators that this would not happen.
The sitting proceeded without any incident of significance because of Members’ commitment to upholding the Rules of the NA – Rules to which they had agreed in the multiparty NA Rules Committee and its Subcommittee.
That the Rules held up indicates a move towards returning to robust but respectful debate which enables Parliament to carry out its Constitutional mandate effectively and to meet the expectations of the electorate.
