The Portfolio Committee on Labour has voiced its satisfaction with the public hearings on the national minimum wage held in the North West province this week.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Lumka Yengeni, said the input from mineworkers in both Klerksdorp and Rustenburg is crucial and will be included in the Committee’s final report.
“All the processes happening around the national minimum wage at National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) will eventually come to the Portfolio Committee for consideration. The Parliamentary process and the Nedlac process as led by the Deputy President are not mutually exclusive. Both processes will inform whatever decision the Committee arrives at,” Ms Yengeni said.
She also announced that the Gauteng and the Free State leg of the public hearings had been postponed to a date that will be communicated to the respective provinces as Members of the Committee are required to honour the sitting of Parliament on Thursday.
