Parliament on National Key Point breach briefing

The Portfolio Committee on Police has undertaken to set aside 5 November 2015 for a meeting in which the South African Police Service will be expected to brief the Committee on Visible and Public Order Policing units in relation to the recent breaches at Parliament, a National Key Point.

The National Key Point breach of Parliament, according to Committee Chairperson Mr Francois Beukman, was witnessed during the fees-related protests by students last week. During the planned Committee meeting, SAPS will be expected to table a status report on the handling of the recent students’ protests.

Mr Beukman further stated that the Portfolio Committee wanted to ascertain the performance of the relevant SAPS programmes or units in handling the recent protests. “The breach of Parliament (a National Key Point) and a proactive management of the events that unfolded there will also be scrutinised.

Mr Beukman said an invite had also been extended to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to be part of the meeting in order to brief the Committee on any complaints that may have arisen from the events.

Further details of the meeting will be communicated in due course.
