Parliament moves motion at SADC Parliamentary Forum Plenary Assembly on passing of Zambian President Michael Sata

Parliament’s National Assembly Speaker, Ms Baleka Mbete has moved a motion on the passing away of Zambian President Mr Michael Sata at the 36th Plenary Assembly of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum.

Mr Sata passed away on 28 October 2014, at the age of 77. He became president of the Republic of Zambia in 2011, making him its fifth President.

His political career spanned a period of 30 years during which he served, among others, as councilor, governor, cabinet minister and Head of State.

Ms Mbete’s motion, seconded by Speaker of the National Assembly of Zimbabwe, Advocate Jacob F Mudenda, proposed that the SADC Parliamentary Forum’s Plenary Assembly acknowledge the role which Mr Sata had played in regional politics within the SADC, that his death had robbed the African continent and the SADC region in particular of a talented and experienced leader, who would be sorely missed and convey the assembly’s sincere condolences to the Sata family, the government and the people of Zambia and wish them strength and comfort.

The SADC Parliamentary Forum’s 36th Plenary Assembly was held at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
