Parliament mourns passing of Mr Michael Coetzee, Secretary to Parliament

It is with deep sadness and shock that Parliament’s Presiding Officers have learnt of the passing today of Secretary to Parliament, Mr Michael Coetzee.

We extend our profound condolences to Mr Coetzee’s wife Bridgette, his son Matthew, his mother and other members of his family and friends and wish them every strength during this sorrowful time.

Mr Coetzee was diagnosed with cancer several years ago. But, true to his character, he fought the disease, refusing simply to surrender to its ravages, while continuing to serve Parliament with distinction and fulfilling the many other roles of his life.

Parliament appointed Mr Coetzee as Secretary to Parliament, the institution’s top official and its accounting officer in November 2012.

His physical presence may be no more but his legacy lives on. Hamba kahle Mike.

Further details in this regard will be released in due course.
