The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education is currently meeting education stakeholders in Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape. The visit follows reported disruptions in the Sterkspruit District allegedly by teachers who are affiliated to the South African Democratic Teachers Union.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, says the visit is a fact-finding mission to assess the impact of Sadtu’s rejection of inspectors and district officials to schools.
“Learning could not happen if there were no inspections and monitoring. A district like Sterkspruit which came in last in 2013’s results could not afford any form of disruptions to education,” Ms Gina said.
The Committee will meet with various stakeholders including organised labour, Community Forum, and school governing bodies.
