The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Trade and International Relations, Mr Eddie Makue, says it is important to foster intergovernmental relations as this will ensure that the voices of local people are heard.
“The local sphere of government is critical in giving a voice to the people. The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is challenged by how the voice of the local government could be strengthened through the constitutional framework,” Mr Makue said.
Mr Makue is leading the Select Committees of Economic Development, and Trade and International Relations on a week-long oversight visit to the Northern Cape (Upington) and Limpopo (Vhembe district).
He said the Committees were mindful of the challenges that the country was faced when it came to resources, and that SA operated in a very competitive global environment. The Committees will assess the progress made regarding the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP), Industrial Action Plan (IPAP), and the National Growth Plan (NGP).
“The Committees are not here to judge, but to assess, learn and enrich the understanding of the members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP),” he said.
