The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Francois Beukman, will from 10am today conduct unannounced inspections at the Ashton Police Station and its Satellite Station in Zolani township, which is located near Worcester in Western Cape.
Mr Beukman says the visit to this police station is in line with the Committee’s commitment to ensure that policing challenges in rural areas are proactively addressed in a manner that will lead to effective functioning of police stations in these areas.
The Chairperson, will among other things, seek to understand why community members complain about the response time police take in attending to crimes reported. He will also attempt to guide role players in ensuring that the CPF in Zolani township functioned in a manner consistent with the SAPS Act.
During this visit, Mr Beukman will meet with representatives of the Ashton community, the CPF and station management in an attempt to get a view of policing challenges facing this area, including possible interventions. He will also conduct a site inspection of the station to assess the station’s general functioning - checking legislative compliance and related matters.
