In an attempt to deal with the scourge of HIV and AIDS, Parliament has formed a joint Committee on HIV and AIDS.
Co-chairperson of the committee, Dr Bevan Goqwana said the country was among countries that had the highest HIV infection rates in the world so it was necessary and important for Parliament to form a committee that specifically focused on the pandemic and how its spread could be prevented. Dr Goqwana added that in the medical wards in hospitals more than 50% of patients have illnesses related to HIV and AIDS.
The committee will comprise Members of Parliament from the National Council of Provinces and the National Assembly. It was borne out of a decision by the subcommittee on the Review of Joint Rules.
The committee will act as an advisory, influential and consultative body. Among its functions, the Committee will monitor and evaluate the implementation of government’s strategy, policy and programmes.
Key activities that the committee will be to introduce an HIV and AIDS related focus in parliamentary activities including programming of debates; monitoring parliamentary oversight to ensure that HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment are priorities on the national agenda.
The committee will also examine and evaluate the legal framework and make recommendation on existing and proposed legislation coming from the Department of Health.
Dr Goqwana said that he hoped the establishment of the cCommittee would lead to the decrease of HIV infections in the country.
