The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Beauty Dlulane, has noted with deep sadness the passing of the veteran official of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, Mr Alex “Goldfingers” Shakoane who was with the club for decades.
Ms Dlulane said the committee is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Shakoane and extends its heartfelt condolences to the Shakoane family, Sundowns Football Club family and the South African football community as a whole.
Ms Dlulane said: “Mr Shakoane was a popular figure among the South African soccer fans and the South African football community will feel his departure and absence. He did marvellous work in growing the support base of Sundowns as its Public Relations Officer (PRO) and promoted football in general in the mid to late 90s in South Africa.”
Mr Shakoane had a long association with the Sundowns Football Club, and that the South African football fans generally loved him. He was a versatile PRO and Mobilisation Manager who promoted the club widely in South Africa and beyond. He passed away on Sunday, following a suspected stroke attack according to media reports.
Ms Dlulane said football will be poorer after Mr Goldfingers’ departure. He was a shining feature in the South African Football and his name will be inscribed in the galaxy of names of soccer heroes and legends. He leaves behind an indelible mark in the South African football. “The committee says robala ka kgotso Mr Shakoane. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
