Police Committee meets Chinese Community Centre in Port Elizabeth to discuss safety issues

The Portfolio Committee on Police met on 3 December 2018 with representatives of the Chinese Community Centre in Port Elizabeth to discuss the promotion of safety and also community support for the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mr Francois Beukman, said it is important for the committee to interact with all formations and associations that can contribute to a crime-free society. Mr Beukman said further that good relationships between the law enforcement community and new immigrants to South Africa is important for community stability and mutual understanding. The committee welcomes community-based initiatives that contribute to a safe society for all.

“The participation of community associations in local community policing forum (CPF) activities is essential to ensure strong links with community leaders and civil society,” Mr Beukman emphasised.

The committee will today visit the northern areas of Port Elizabeth and hold meetings with CPFs and community organisations to discuss gang violence and the response of the Saps.
