Parliament on Department of Mineral Resources' annual performance plan

The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources made a number of inputs into the Department of Mineral Resources’ (DMR) Annual Performance Plan (APP) for the 2015/16 financial year.

The Committee stressed that the department should include the following in its APP: a programme on heritage sites at derelict mining hostels; the rehabilitation of ownerless mines; integrated strategies on women in mining, mine health and safety; and monitoring of mining permits.

DMR appeared before the Committee on Wednesday to present its APP with a budget of R1.59 billion. The Committee told the department to revise the plan, taking into account the Committee’s inputs.

The Committee raised concerns about the department’s transfer of R325 million to the Council for Geoscince (CGS) and wanted to know if this money constituted the Council’s total budget. This is because the CGS’s scope of work goes beyond the mandate of DMR and overlaps with other departments.

“We believe that other departments that are covered under the mandate of CGS should also contribute to the Council’s budget,” Mr Luzipho said.
