Parliament on death of Minister Collins Chabane

The Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration/Performance Monitoring and Evaluation is shocked and saddened by the untimely passing of Minister Collins Chabane.

“Within the few months of the 5th Parliament that the Committee worked with Minister Chabane he embodied the spirit of cooperation and respect for the work of the Committee. He held in high esteem the values of accountability and was always willing to appear before the Committee even on short notice,” said Peace Mabe, the Chairperson of the Committee.

Cabinet and South Africa as a whole has been robbed of a knowledgeable, humble and astute servant of the people. “We will miss his insight, especially within the public service and administration sphere, which is necessary for ensuring the efficiency of the public service for the delivery of quality services for the benefit of all South Africans,” Mabe emphasised.

His passing comes at a critical time within government as negotiations for public sector wage increments are underway and would have benefited from his insight. We are grateful contribution towards the professionalisation of the public sector as required by the National Development Plan.

The Committee sends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, colleagues in Cabinet as well as employees within the public service. “His family must find solace in the fact that he spent most of his life in making South Africa a better place for all to live in,” Mabe concluded.
