The Portfolio Committee on Police has condemned the killing of four men in KwaMashu Hostel, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Friday night. Committee Members also expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the four murdered men and said they cannot imagine the void the passing of these men would leave in their respective families.
Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman says such heinous crimes have no place in our society and called on SAPS to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book as a matter of urgency. “People who go around shooting others must be arrested immediately so that everyone out there who might have had the same intentions can see that the tide against crime has turned,” said Mr Beukman.
Mr Beukman said there was a need for SAPS to deploy adequate resources and manpower to areas that are proving to be problematic, like the KwaMashu Men’s Hostel. He also called on community members to assist SAPS in uprooting crime. “The more our people volunteer information to SAPS about these criminal elements the safer our communities will be,” he added.
Mr Beukman said he was hopeful that the Gun Control Summit the Committee will be hosting in February next year would come up with interventions that will lead to a reduction of gun-related killings and incidents.
