Parliament calls on Police management to address challenges at police stations

Police Committee on Police calls on top brass to address challenges

The Portfolio Committee on Police has completed a successful oversight visit to various police stations in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality area, Eastern Cape. The Committee visited East London, Mdantsane NU 1, Berlin and Zwelitsha police stations. The Committee also visited the provincial IPID offices.

According to the Committee Chairperson Ms Annelize van Wyk, the objective was for Committee members to get a sense of how well police stations were implementing various pieces of legislation pertaining to policing, and also to inspect the resources at the targeted police stations.

The Committee was accompanied by the provincial commissioner or representatives from the commissioner’s office and cluster commanders when they visited various police stations. The Committee was not happy with what it discovered. The issue of resources was pointed out as a matter of great concern.

Ms Van Wyk called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) management, including the provincial office, to attend to and address challenges which were identified during the oversight visit to the province. She praised the men and women in blue who continued to serve with diligence. She said there was no space in SAPS for those who did not take their jobs seriously and did not serve their communities with due diligence.
