Parliament on adoption of Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament

New Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament adopted

The Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests, at its meeting of 13 March 2014, adopted a Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests for Assembly and Council Members.

The Code will be tabled for adoption in both the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces before the 4th Parliament adjourns. This new Code is the culmination of a long process of work by the Committee, and seeks to maintain the integrity of Parliament and to promote the ethical conduct of Members.

To this end, the Code provides standards of ethical conduct, indicates the principles of public life, prohibits types of business activity and extends the disclosure requirements. It has also reviewed the sanctions and procedure for the investigation of complaints.
