In anticipation of a capacity crowd for the South Africa –New Zealand FIFA Confederation Cup match to be played tomorrow evening at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa urges fans to make use of Park and Ride facilities, not to bring prohibited items along to the stadium and not to park their vehicles randomly around Phokeng and or Rustenburg.
"Though we have not experienced any incidents of theft of and out of vehicles during the Spain-New Zealand match, we have put in place precautionary measures and increased visibility of crime prevention and law enforcement to ensure safety of vehicles parked at all of our Park and Ride facilities," says MEC Yawa
"Vehicles parked illegally and wrongfully will be towed by accredited towing vehicles to the Rustenburg Municipal Pound for safe keeping at owner's expense" warns MEC Yawa.
FIFA accredited busses and taxis have been arranged to transport fans from Park and Ride facilities at Olympia Park Stadium situated on R27 Nelson Mandela Road, R104 Rietvlei (New Cemetery), Bakwena Platinum Corridor on the N4, Western By pass, R565 Boshoek/Phokeng (Next to Phokeng Post Office junction) and Bafokeng North Mine (Impala-Bobuanja).The arrangement is meant to reduce traffic and ensure its smooth flow on all roads leading to and from the Stadium.
Six traffic control centres have also been erected at Bapong on N4,Swartruggens on N4, Groot Marico on N4,Tsitsing Crossings on R566,Rietvlei N4 off ramp, Rietvlei crossing and Ledig Crossing on the R565 for the duration of the Confederation Cup to ensure proper use of the road by road users.
In addition, Park and Walk facilities have been reserved on a first come first served basis on the western and eastern side of the Stadium. In terms of the FIFA log down which became in force as from 08h00 on Tuesday, All vehicles that have to enter the stadium precinct have to go through the remote search park for processing and accreditation. On Wednesday, the park is set to close at 18h00.
Normal traffic is as part of the log down prohibited on the Phokeng-Sun City road from Uncle Tom intersection passing the stadium up to Phokeng Post Office as the area has been declared a traffic free zone. Only pedestrians, VIP's, VVIP's and players' busses will be allowed to use this part of the road.
Traffic officials and police will be deployed at all intersections to check and divert traffic into the public parking at Uncle Tom intersection on the R565 Phokeng/Sun City Road.
Traffic to Rustenburg will be redirected to use Lenatong road on the Northern side of the Stadium to town. After the match, the same route will be converted into one-way road to Rustenburg town to relieve the R565 Phokeng /Sun City Road.
