Over 79 nurses to start community service

More than 79 community services nurses will be deployed to health facilities next month in the North West province to do mandatory one year community service.

This is in addition to 277 community service nurses that were released to do community service in November 2009.

The nurses completed their four year nursing training studies and training from Excelsius Nursing College in Klerksdorp. A total of 64 are new nurses will be doing their community service, while the rest have been practising as nurses and only upgraded at the college.

The college together with Mmabatho Nursing College are tasked with training and producing nurses for the health facilities in the province

Both colleges have recruited over 250 students in January this year to study in different fields like advance midwifery, psychiatric nursing, primary healthcare and operating theatre.

The nursing professionals will add value and help address an acute shortage in clinics especially in remote rural areas.

Benefits such as rural allowances and Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD), are available to all the nurses working in the province.
