Over 4 500 motorists issued with fines in North West (NW) zero tolerance traffic law operations North West Traffic Authorities have as part of zero tolerance road traffic law enforcement operations thus far issued over 4 500 motorists with tickets for speeding, discontinued 82 unroadworthy vehicles and arrested 57 drunken drivers.
The preliminary milestones are in support of the make Roads Safe Campaign/Arrive Alive Festive Season Campaign which was launched in November. North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono says that Operation Futha which focuses on speeding and drunken driving will be intensified across the province ahead of Christmas and New Year festivities. Meanwhile, a 48 years old unlicensed Mozambiquean national was arrested on Tuesday morning at around 5:30 am and the unroadworthy vehicle that he had allegedly driven from Alexandra to collect scrap metal from villages around Mafikeng was discontinued andimpounded.
The vehicle had no side rearview on the driver’s side, it had a cracked windscreen on the driver’s side and its handbrake was dysfunctional. Although it was overloaded with scrap metal, it was itself a scrap. The vehicle’s electrical wiring was not insulated. Its rear lights were smashed, the right hand headlamp was not working and its indicators were all dysfunctional four of its tyres were also completely worn out. Operation Clean Sweep which focuses on driver and vehicle fitness is implemented together with Operation Futha and Operation Footloose which focuses on pedestrians as part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan.
