As part of improving road safety and reducing crime in Mpumalanga, Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison traffic officers in collaboration with SAPS have issued at least 2703 fines for various traffic offences over the weekend during various operations that took place across the province.
The operations are part of the department’s traffic law enforcement activities. Roadblocks and rest stops are staged in different routes of the province and are expected to continue throughout the year as a means of reducing road carnage and crime in the province. 223 vehicles were also impounded while 224 were discontinued as they were not road worthy.
As part of eradicating crime in townships, police also visited liquor outlets and searched more than one thousand people in Ermelo. Some of them were found to be in possession of dangerous weapons.
Meanwhile seven people were arrested in Ermelo in a separate operation for among others driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent and reckless driving. One of them was found in possession of dagga. While other two people were also arrested and charged with public drinking.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe applauded traffic officials and the police for the role that they continue to play in ensuring that crime is prevented and the roads are safer.
He calls on community members not to turn a blind eye when they experience reckless driving or are witnessing crime in their areas.
“We need to work harder to eliminate the scourge of road carnage in order to restore communities’ faith in law enforcers. We cannot succeed on our own; we need communities to work with us by among others reporting crime, bad driving and spread road safety messages.
“Road users are warned to obey traffic regulations on our roads to ensure that there is a reduction of accidents in the province,” said Shongwe
