Over 12 900 vehicles stopped in Mpumalanga

As part of the province’s zero tolerance to overloading and unroadworthy vehicles this Easter Holidays, 113 vehicles were discontinued while another 36 were impounded in Mpumalanga. 39 trailers were also impounded over the last 48 hours.

The operations, which are still continuing throughout the Easter, have also led to a stopping of 12 912 vehicles. A total of 2 833 notices were issued to drivers for various offences. 23 people were also arrested for excessive speeding, drunken driving and possession of false documents.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has reiterated his call to motorists to drive carefully with due consideration to other road users in order to avoid unnecessary accidents.

The MEC has also called on law enforcement to save more lives on the road by dealing harshly with those who disregards traffic regulations over this long weekend. He said stiffer fines must be issued to offenders so that other would be offenders are deterred.

“We need to reduce if not eliminate accidents this Easter Holidays and beyond. We can only succeed if we all play our part,” the MEC said.

The ongoing operations are part of the department’s traffic law enforcement activities this Easter weekend. Roadblocks and rest stops are staged in different routes of the province and are expected to continue throughout this weekend.
