Operation Lemoga conducted by the Mabopane Gauteng Traffic Police of the Department of Community Safety today impounded 80 taxis in and around Mabopane, Soshanguve and Garankuwa for roadworthiness. The operation comes in the week of two taxi accidents occurring one week.
Although notices have earlier been given to taxi operators to present their taxis at Ipeleng Testing Centre to be tested free of charge, the call was not adhered to. All unroadworthy taxis vehicle found during the operation to be not roadworthy, will be temporarily suspended pending presentation at the testing centre within 14 days and only when they are fit to be on our roads, will they be allowed to traverse Gauteng roads. Failure to do, the vehicle operation licence will be ceased and have to pay testing fee when presenting the vehicle for testing.
Commenting on this operation, MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu wishes to argue all taxi operators to join hands with government in ensuring public passenger transport users enjoys pleasant and safe ride on our roads.
