Over 2 600 motorists were issued with tickets for speed offences and 21 driver licenses cancelled or endorsed across the North West Province in the past three months, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono revealed on Friday.
MEC Mohono in considering the quarterly performance review report also observed that 13 319 vehicles were checked for driver fitness and vehicle fitness and 1 259 zero tolerance special operations against lawlessness on public roads were conducted and more than 19 000 summonses were issued to motorists for various traffic offences during the period that also covered the December Festive Season.
In noting the milestones, the MEC said that Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities will continue to strengthen their operations on main roads and intensify law enforcement as part of its 2011/2022 Decade of Action for Road Safety programme.
Twenty new traffic officers were appointed during the period to beef up the workforce for 24/7 traffic law enforcement shifts on priority routes. Thirty-seven more traffic officers are to be appointed before the end of the financial year and an additional 50 traffic officers are to be appointed in the new financial year.
Meanwhile, Mohono says that zero tolerance traffic law enforcement operations are to be intensified as traffic volumes are expected to increase ahead of opening of schools in the province next week.
