The old retirement village between Krugersdorp and Randfontein will be converted into a social housing development to provide shelter to 1 590 families. Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe today did a sod turning event of the Mogale Junction that will benefit people from the mines and the surrounding communities.
The Mogale Junction Social Housing project is a partnership between government and Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) and Blue Print Joint Venture. At least 480 units will target the primary market with an income of below R3 500 per month.
This is the first social housing scheme of its kind in Mogale City and will go a long way in reducing the shortage of accommodation. Phase 1 has been approved and consists of 770 units, and 231 of those units will target the primary market.
MEC Ntombi Mekgwe said this is part of the plans outlined by Premier Nomvula Mokonyane during her State of the Province Address where she mentioned that Human settlement is one of the key needs for the people of Gauteng.
MEC Mekgwe said they are always willing to extend their hand to the private sector to seek partnerships that will help in changing the lives of the people. “This kind of a partnership is based on the mutual desire to ensure that people of Gauteng live in proper and comfortable homes,” said Mekgwe.
She also reiterated that that the province has pledged R240 million towards the acquisition of 15 properties which are well-located for low income and affordable housing.
