Officials confiscate a laptop brought for Derby-Lewis by his wife

Security officials guarding offender, Clive Derby-Lewis blocked Mrs Gaye Derby-Lewis from bringing him a laptop without following correctional procedures when she was visiting him at the hospital. The laptop was confiscated by the Emergency Support Team members.

In terms of the departmental policy and regulations, offenders doing particularly computer studies are allowed access to a computer only after following strict procedures. In terms those procedures, an application must be submitted, checked by an educationist who also must verify such registration with the relevant educational institution. Before approval is granted such a computer must be checked by the department’s Information Technology (IT) Unit to ensure that it cannot be used for anything other than studies.

The department is investigating the conduct and will determine if any further steps are required following this incident.
