NWest government confident COSATU-Sun City conflict to be resolved

The North West Provincial Government is encouraged by the commitment of the Congress of South African Trade Union-North West (COSATU-NW) and Sun International to work towards finding solutions to their conflict. This follows an intervention meeting facilitated by the provincial government in Mahikeng on Wednesday.

The Provincial government regards it as an affront to democracy that racial incidents that undermine reconciliation and nation building have occurred at Sun City, it has committed to support the parties in their endeavour to find resolution to the conflict that arose from a sexual harassment incident in which an employee/s of 24/7, a security service provider allegedly tortured a guests arrested for the incident with a Tazer baton.

The appointment of Jeff Mabote as operational manager at Sun City to lead the transformation process and the establishment of quarterly forums are expected to improve relations between the parties.

Though it has noted that the management of Sun City had taken action against those accused of human rights violations and racism in the past, the provincial government is concerned that criminal charges were not laid with the police for those responsible to be arrested and prosecuted.

The meeting resolved that a comprehensive investigation into recent incidents of  alleged human rights violations and racism should be further investigated with a view to ensure that they are not practiced by security service providers as they have a potential to tarnish the brand image of the North West Province and Sun City as tourism destination.

A follow-up meeting is to be held soon to evaluate video footage of the incident and other evidence, evaluate progress and determine a way-forward.
