North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono supports the bold steps taken by Rustenburg Local Municipality to deal with illegal occupation of 1 500 low cost houses at the R318 million Seraleng Integrated Human Settlement outside Rustenburg in the North West province.
The provincial housing performance intervention team met with officials from the municipality earlier this week and received reports on processes followed towards regularising 800 illegal occupants who had applied for housing subsidies and the eviction of 700 in the near future. The municipality has with endorsement by Council already issued notices of intention to evict to the illegal occupants.
In committing her department to support the municipality to meet its housing development needs, MEC Mohono also commented the municipality for finding a solution for water borne toilets instead of VIP toilets for 137 houses which are below the sewer line at the Boitekong Extension(Ext) eight Housing Development Project.
Meanwhile, MEC Mohono’s department has given the municipality until the end of this month for it to finalise reconciliation of the R50 million housing conditional grant that was allocated for the construction of R1 590 housing units in Meriting Ext four and five.
The housing development project which is earmarked to be unblocked was stalled by a court interdict by a housing developer after the National Housing Builders Registration Council queried poor workmanship.
