Twenty three million housing development projects targeted at the homeless in Reagile township and Redirile/Derby outside Koster in the North West Province are to commence in the next two weeks. The projects to accelerate housing delivery in an effort to eradicate informal settlements in Kgetleng Rivier Local Municipality were announced by Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono during her meeting with the local mayor, Councillor Kim Medupi on Monday.
According to the project management team, geotechnical investigations for construction of 268 housing units at a cost of R15 million in Reagile Extension six and seven have been concluded. MEC Mohono appealed to the municipality to expedite identification of beneficiaries and stands for subsidy applications as well as approval of house designs for immediate commencement of the project after its registration by the National Home Builders Registration Council.
The MEC briefed Mayor Medupi that the eight million housing development project earmarked for Redirile/Derby for which site handover was done two weeks ago for construction of 129 housing units is also expected to commence shortly.
Developers are on site to rectify poor workmanship at 35 incomplete housing units in Borolelo Ext two and three which are apart of 500 houses under construction in the area and construction of additional 59 units in Regaile Ext three. The rectification is part of the department’s resolve to unblock housing projects and deliver quality houses.
MEC Mohono committed that her department will assist Kgetleng Rivier Local Municipality with beneficiary house allocations and subsidy administration to ensure that the occupation of completed houses at the R51,6 million Mazista Integrated Human Settlement goes without glitches and runs concurrently with demolition of shacks at the Skierlik informal settlement.
Meanwhile, the provincial department is also engaged in financial and physical audits for the 1137 housing units completed in Reagile and 440 units in Borolelo to bring the multi-million housing development projects to closure.
