NW housing subsidy administration capacity to be enhanced

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono recently committed her department to enhance subsidy administration capacity in partnership with municipalities across the province.

Presenting a detailed report on how the department is dealing with illegal occupation to the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, MEC Mohono outlined that her department is working closely with municipalities to evict illegal occupations in completed housing units across the province.

“As the department we are still experiencing challenges in dealing directly with the illegal occupation as municipalities are better placed to handle the challenge.

“The application and enforcement is within the municipality,” said Mohono.

Although the eviction process is lengthy, Mohono said her department is working tirelessly to reach a resolution and provide housing to its rightful beneficiaries.

“The department is in the process of undertaking verification on occupancy and physical audits in partnership with municipalities and pertinent stakeholders with a view of assisting the process to be concluded.”

Mohono said future allocations will be done on the basis of the housing needs register as the department has already appointed a service provider to develop a demand database for the province.

“Beneficiary administration is key to managing and averting any possible illegal occupation.”

“As part of preventing illegal occupation which is a serious worrying factor in the province, we are going to ensure that immediate occupation is done when the house is complete,” concluded Mohono.
