North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison has called upon housing developers in the province to remain steadfast in their commitment towards making housing construction a real business.
Honouring men and women who went an extra mile in making sure that people are housed in the true sense of a settlement from across the province, MEC applauded the outstanding quality of all projects which she said it brought the province on the map as one of the delivering provinces and that will make it possible for her department to reach the 2014 mission of total eradication of informal settlements.
Crediting developers at the glittering awards ceremony, MEC Mohono said these awards, serves to motivate all stakeholders in the housing industry to harness human and other resources available in accelerating housing delivery to improve the lives of millions of South Africans. “Our mandate is to provide choice of quality housing, opportunities with secure tenure and access to all social relevant amenities” said Mohono.
Announcing the 2012 Govan Mbeki champions, Mohono said she has hope on those who will represent the province at the national competition.
The enormous housing developer, Toro Ya Afrika was awarded the best informal settlements upgrading following their successful completion of 500 housing units project in Mazista, the young and energetic Malebo Magasa of Tawana Construction who entered the formerly paternal dominated industry by storm, was awarded the best women contractor following her successful completion of 50 housing units in Rasimone village at the Rustenburg Local Municipality, while the Barzani 69 went home with the best youth contractor.
In the Financial Linked Subsidy Project (FLISP), the Impala Platinum Mine was honoured as the best and the Lethabong FEDUP scooped the People’s Housing Process (PHP) category.
The Govan Mbeki Human Settlements Housing Awards are aimed to showcase and demonstrate excellent work done by the department with special emphasis to promote best practices in the delivery of core mandate including outcome 8 deliverables.
These awards are meant to motivate all stakeholders in the Human Settlements space to harness the human and other resources in accelerating delivery. The awards are further set to honour role players in the housing value chain that have committed to partner with government in building sustainable human settlements and making the millennium development goals achievable by 2014.
The winners of the provincial awards will represent the province during the national awards ceremony which will be held in Gauteng at the end of May.
