North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison in partnership with criminal justice stakeholders have called upon communities from across the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati to restrain from alcohol abuse mostly during this festive season.
The call was made during the recent Provincial Justice Crime Prevention and Security (PJCPS) community engagement session, held at Vuselela College Hall in Podimoe.
Addressing hundreds of communities gathered at the session, departmental officials and relevant stakeholders said most criminal activities, such as woman and child abuse, rape and domestic violence, mostly in rural areas are informed by alcohol abuse.
Men and women who attended the session were further requested to observe the last remaining days of the 16 Days of Activism Against Woman and Child Abuse, which comes to an end on Sunday, 10 December 2011.
During presentations made by different stakeholders, communities were empowered on the functioning of the criminal justice system, which includes among others issues of bail, Charter for victims of crime, child justice court, cases closed as undetected, sexual offences intervention, school safety, issues of liquor license and others.
The community engagement sessions were informed by a general observation that communities lack information with regards to how the criminal justice system works which impacts negatively on service delivery.
Through these sessions, the department in partnership with relevant criminal justice stakeholders intends to promote cooperation and form partnership between the police and the communities, and among sector departments, civil society, provincial and local levels around crime prevention initiatives.
