The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the 68 years direct imprisonment sentence that was handed down to Madoda Allam at the circuit court sitting in Worcester this morning. Judge President John Hlophe convicted Allam on ten counts including three counts of rape, sexual assault, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two counts of pointing a firearm and theft.
As the NPA we are very satisfied with the sentence as it sends out a very strong message that as an organisation we will do our best to ensure that women who are victims of such heinous crimes get justice. We hope it serves as a warning to other would be criminals that you commit crime, you will suffer the consequences. Justice has been done for these victims of crime.
We understand that most of them still bear the scars of Allam's actions but we hope this sentence and therapeutic interventions ordered by the court will bring some closure. We are happy that some of victims expressed appreciation to the prosecutor, Advocate Ntsoaki Mabiletse for the way she conducted the case and secure the conviction.
The accused modus operandi in committing these crimes showed that they were calculated. He offered the women who were hiking for lifts around the Worcester area. He would then drive to secluded areas where he would rape and rob his victims. He assaulted some of his victims and left them in unfamiliar areas in the dark exposing them to further danger.
His crime spree spread over three years from 2011 to 2013. His victims are still so traumatised that they were even afraid of speaking to the investigating officer. One of them was a matriculant who struggled to write her exams.
Sentencing Allam, Judge Hlophe told him “the crimes you have committed are serious, horrendous and heinous. You have no feelings, no emotions, you no empathy, no sympathy. You are like a piece of wood. You are an evil person. I hope you rot in jail. "Judge Hlophe also ordered that Allam's name be included in the national register of sex offenders and that he was not fit to possess a firearm.
