On Friday 27 January 2012, the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) obtained a restraint order of R2.1 million in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act against Doctor Jurry Sehunoe.
The restraint order emanates from the fraud and money laundering charges in respect of which Dr Sehunoe was charged, together with Mr Maxwel Ramaphosa and Mr Samuel Elliot Mfeleng, who were employees of the Compensation Fund.
Dr Sehunoe was part of a syndicate, which involved officials of the Department of Labour and Compensation Fund, who submitted fictitious claims. The claims submitted suggested that employees had been treated for injuries and other illnesses suffered on duty.
Dr Sehunoe has subsequently been convicted and will be sentenced on 28 March 2012 while the trial in respect of his co-accused will be heard on the 22 February 2012 at the Pretoria Magistrates' Court. This matter is but one of the continuing investigations and prosecutions in respect of the Compensation Fund.
The restraint order was granted by the North Gauteng High Court and property worth over R2.1 million from Dr Sehunoe, represents the benefit that he derived from his illegal activities. The Curator has today executed the order and attached immovable property in the form of a house at 19 Baulienia Avenue, Geelhout Park, Rustenburg, household items as well as two vehicles.
The criminal trial and asset forfeiture application are the result of an intensive joint operation between the Hawks, the NPA's commercial crimes component and the AFU. The NPA will rigorously prosecute those who undermine government’s efforts of rooting out corruption in state institutions.
