Northern Cape Transport on success of Road Safety campaign

Departmental staff hold a successful Road Safety Awareness Campaign on a dangerous crossing

A successful Road Safety Awareness Campaign initiated by officials at the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison in the Northern Cape unfolded at the start of the weekend.

The initiative by staff was to raise awareness on road safety and also give focus to one of the concerning intersections in Kimberley, the R31 Barkley West and N12 crossing better known as the Kalahari Crossing. The awareness campaign with road safety messages and flyer distribution unfolded at the crossing with over 80 officials from the department involved.

Departmental staff members with the coordination of our Provincial Traffics stopped passing vehicles to inform them to keep safe on the roads and handed them flyers with road safety tips.

Head of Department, Mr Steven Jonkers said the event was successful with staff members who joined the initiative in numbers.

“Motorists who were stopped appreciated the initiative,” said Jonkers.

“It was great that even some concerned groups from the community joined us such as Saam Staan Kimberley… who want to work with us going forward on such initiatives,” he added.

Jonkers said he hopes the motorists and community members will take their road safety messages to heart and apply messages that we shared with them and we continue to share as a department.

“It is important for people to know that while travelling, fatigue can be an enemy and people need to rest every 200km or 2hours when on the road to avoid falling asleep on the road or losing concentration,” said one staff member.

Some of the messages displayed on plucards by officials stated: “Road safety is our responsibility,” “Never use a cellphone whilst driving” and “Be road wise”.
