Northern Cape Transport on learner transport service

Northern Cape Province's learner transport on track with no hiccups

The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison entrusted with the learner transport responsibility in the Province would like to report that services are on track and it was all systems go at the start of schools, with no hiccups reported.

The Learner Transport service is being monitored and remedies are already in place should we encounter any challenges but we foresee no challenges.

The Public Transport Inspectorate (PTI), a unit within the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison has been deployed in Frances Baard, Pixley ka Seme, Siyanda and John Taolo Gaetsewe Districts to monitor learner transport operations to enable the department to respond immediately to any challenge that may be encountered.

Our department has also been in contact with the Department of Education to assess if there were any learner transport related matters reported to them from any of the school today.

We have also been hands on, over and above, checking for vehicle fitness and general compliance. Our Public Transport Inspectorate unit have been visiting schools and interviewed drivers, learners and educators responsible for managing learner transport at the respective schools.

Our reports received from both the Public Transport Inspectors and Department of Education is that services were in general satisfactorily rendered by contracts to all schools. We have not received any report indicates that learners were not transport to school or arrived late at school. Should we receive any non-compliance matters as a department we will not hesitate to immediately institute remedial steps.

One vehicle was discontinued by the Public Transport Inspectors in Harswater because it was not roadworthy. The owner of the vehicle provided a substitute vehicle.

We are not aware of any crisis as all services are in order and payment are being done. Service providers have been getting paid within 15 days of receipt of an error free invoice accompanied by the necessary documents as prove that service was delivered.
