Northern Cape Transport on arrest of drunk drivers during festive season

21 Drunk drivers arrested as Province continues with its Festive Season Traffic Operations.

Twenty one (21) drunk drivers have been arrested this weekend in the Northern Cape following massive traffic law enforcement operations that have been intensified leading into the festive season.

So far 2 986 vehicles have been stopped and checked with 162 summonses have been issued for general defects on a vehicle and other infringements.

21 drunk drivers have been arrested with two other arrests for false documentation. Two vehicles have been impounded and four vehicles discontinued for not being roadworthy.

The Head of Department, Mr Steven Jonkers said the weekend operations were a huge success and the statistics show.

“Our biggest concern is drunken driving. We are not satisfied with the level of drunken driving we are seeing on our roads,” he said.

Jonkers said, “We will not compromise but will apply the law to its full force.”

“We are coming for those drunk drivers and we are not going to have mercy on them,” he added.

“We want to keep the people in our province safe. We have reinforced our operations with the National Traffic Police and that’s how serious we are about our operations.”

Jonkers expressed gratitude to the good response they have received during the operations.

“It is great to see that people appreciate our efforts as a province. Motorists and the general community said they appreciated the operations as we have engaged with them through our operations.”

The weekend operations were joined by the National Traffic Police, South African Police Service and Road Traffic Management Corporation.
