Northern Cape Transport appeals to road users to practice caution on roads

Appeal to all road users to continue to use the roads with caution during wet weather conditions and night falls quicker

The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison will like to appeal to all road users to continue to use the roads with caution as the weather conditions become wet and night falls quicker.

As the weather conditions gradually change, it is important that all road users adapt to the season change, remain alert and use the roads with caution. Days have started to become darker quicker and the roads wet, requiring all roads users to remain visible, alert and cautious at all times.

Motorists must continue to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles, especially checking that the vehicles’ lights and tail-lights are in working conditions, including those with trailers.

In an effort to remain visible, it is important to keep ones lights on while driving, it helps make sure that the vehicle is visible to other motorists and other road users. This is still advisable for both night and day driving, even for long distance trips. It is also imperative not to dazzle other drivers and to calmly indicate if an oncoming vehicle is dazzling you without blinding their vision.

Another cautious measure to take into consideration while on the road, is to always keep a safe following distance and avoid speeding or overtaking other vehicle when the road is not clearly visible.

Driving at a moderate speed will improve control of the vehicle and enable better observation of the road and of other road users.

The department will continue with its efforts to road safety awareness programmes while it is important that road users continue to obey the rules of the road and be considerate of other road users. Road safety is a 365 Days commitment for all and remains the responsibility of all to ensure safer roads for all.

Let us continue to obey the rules of the road and be mindful and considerate of other road users.
