The Northern Cape newly appointed MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison MEC Mack Jack would like to caution against reckless and negligent driving for all road users especially in the John Taolo Gaetsewe as traffic volumes has increased in the area. He said all road users need to abide by the rules of the road as the law will be enforced accordingly for the benefit of all road users.
MEC Jack said law enforcement agents’ visibility will be increased, also in John Taolo Gaetsewe, and will not enforce the law with any leniency but will apply it to its full extent across the province. He said all road users deserve to travel and feel safe on the roads.
The Head of Department Mr Stephen Jonkers has also emphasised the need to exercise caution on the roads. He said law enforcement agents were on the roads enforcing the law and the road users needed to comply with the rules of the roads.
“It is unfortunate that we recently lost one of our traffic officials in the line of duty in a freak accident,” said HOD Jonkers.
Mr Johan Bezuidenhout, Public Transport Inspector, who was stationed at Springbok, recently passed away when two vehicles collided on the road while he was conducting Public Transport Operations in John Taolo Gaetsewe, at the Kathu intersection. One of the cars involved in the accident claimed his life during the accident.
Jonkers has described the accident as unfortunate and a great loss to the department. He said any life lost on the roads is one too many and people needed to join hands with the department and play their part on the roads. HOD Jonkers said the department will continue to engage with road transport stakeholders to join hands with the department in curbing road accidents and applying rules of the roads.
