The North West Provincial Government is to use state expenditure and procurement as leverage to assist its effort to create jobs and support enterprises development, Premier Supra Mahumapelo announced on Friday.
“Cooperatives formed by youth and women in particular will receive major focus and assistance from government through targeted procurement,” Premier Mahumapelo committed in his State of the Province Address.
Mahumapelo said that services such as provision of school furnisher, school nutrition programme, school uniforms, hospital laundry services, catering, government mailing and courier services, waste management etc. will no longer be contracted through tendering but will be ring-fenced to support cooperatives.
Although information on initial services to launch the cooperatives support will be announced by MEC’s during their Departmental Policy Statements and Budget speeches, Premier Modise emphatically said that there will be no compromise on this approach as a demonstration of the provincial government’s seriousness in dealing with the challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
