North West Treasury strengthens governance through targeted capacity building

Rustenburg: The North West Provincial Treasury trained senior management, personal assistants, secretaries and members of the Risk Management Committee on corporate governance, ethics management, risk management as well as anti-fraud and anti-corruption.

The Corporate Governance, Ethics Management, Risk Management and Anti-Corruption Workshop equipped officials with the knowledge and skills needed to strengthen good governance across government. The two-day session covered governance frameworks and structures, public service ethics and conflicts of interest, enterprise risk management, and the prevention, detection and reporting of fraud and corruption.

Speaking at the gathering, the Head of Department, Ndlela Kunene said the North West Provincial Treasury is committed to building an ethical, accountable and transparent public service. He emphasised that the purpose of the workshop was to deepen institutional capacity in corporate governance, ethics management, risk management and anti-fraud and corruption. Kunene said by investing in these critical areas, the department continues to strengthen public confidence, improve governance systems, and support efficient, effective and clean administration that delivers quality services to the people of the North West.

“The North West Provincial Treasury emphasises that strengthening governance is not a once-off event but an ongoing journey. It requires vigilance, integrity, and collective responsibility at every level of the organization”, exclaimed Kunene.

Noeline Slogrove, Associate Director at Altimax and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, facilitated the intensive programme. Slogrove indicated that the workshop was designed to translate governance theory into practical public sector application. She guided participants through South Africa’s evolving governance landscape and emphasised that effective governance is not merely about compliance but about ethical leadership, integrated decision-making, and sustainable value creation.

The session anchored governance in the four foundational outcomes of ethical culture, performance and value creation, conformance and prudent control, and legitimacy. Participants examined the King V Report’s principles and recommended practices, including integrated thinking across the six capitals which are financial, manufactured, intellectual, human, natural, and social and relationship capital.

Chief Director Corporate Service Matshediso Jansen, said the gathering underscored Ubuntu-Botho as an expression of integrated thinking, reminding officials that organisational success is intrinsically linked to collective wellbeing and stakeholder inclusivity. She said through the Corporate Governance, Ethics Management, Risk Management and Anti-Corruption Workshop, officials are being equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to strengthen good governance across government.
