A traffic officer from the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit sustained serious injuries after he was knocked down by a bus on the R503 Mahikeng-Lichtenburg road on Saturday morning. The accident which occurred about 15 kilometers from Lichtenburg was the fifth to happen on the road in the past six days.
It is alleged that the officer had pulled over the 30 seater Tata private bus which was driving on the yellow lane from Mahikeng towards Lichtenburg at around 8:00 am but it unexpectedly changed lanes, side swept a Toyota Tazz that was on the left lane also driving towards Lichtenburg and knocked him down.
It is suspected that the bus driver changed lanes due to faulty brakes to avoid driving into the back a stationary bakkie which was pulled over ahead of him by other traffic officers. The forty-three year old officer was rushed by paramedics to General Delaray Provincial Hospital in Lichtenburg.
Police are investigating a case of reckless and or negligent driving against the bus driver.
In wishing Senior Provincial Inspector Tebogo Sekgetho a speedy recovery, Acting MEC for the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Dr Magome Masike also appealed to motorists to desist from yellow lane driving and treating the road as a four lane road.
