Three hundred and eighty-six (386) road traffic offenders have thus far been netted along the R503 Mafikeng-Lichtenburg Road through the zero tolerance traffic law enforcement and collaborative efforts of the North West provincial traffic authorities in the past week.
The landmark is part of a month long operation dubbed 'Operation Moretlwa-Die Poppe Sal Dans'.
"The objective of the operation as part of the provincial rolling enforcement plan is intended to change driver behaviour and reduce accidents on the road that has contributed to a significant number of accidents in the province. We'll hit hard at road users with a passion for speeding until they share the road responsibly with other road users," says North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa.
Though no accidents and incidents have occurred along the road since the operation targeted at reckless and inconsiderate road users was launched a week ago, 162 tickets were issued to road users for speeding, 56 for not wearing seat belts, 37 were arrested for driving without licenses, 11 for overtaking on a barrier line and scores of other for worn out tyres, unlicensed vehicles and overloading.
Eighteen taxis were also issued with tickets for fitted illegal extra seats and their seats stripped and several others for operating without permits and on wrong routes.
