North West Road Traffic Management Authorities have impounded a white Microbus taxi between Haartebeesfontein and Klerksdorp around 8 o’clock this morning. According to authorities the taxi was impounded for being unroadworthy while commuting passengers from Ottosdal to Johannesburg.
Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison MEC, Nono Maloyi expressed his concern about drivers who continue to endanger the lives of commuters.
“The state of this minibus taxi is shocking. Our people’s lives are in danger,” said the stunned Maloyi.
He said it shows that most drivers seem to be ignorant of the law and the department will harshly deal with those found on the wrong side of the law. “This is just a pure ignorance of the law. We have just discontinued a whole lot of unroadworthy vehicles in this area last week and following that success no one would ever expect such a bed conditioned taxi on the road.”
MEC Maloyi said traffic authorities would be on the road 24/7 to ensure safety of people travelling on the roads of the province.
According to traffic authorities, the impounded microbus taxi appeared to have been involved in a head on collision and it was never been repaired. The taxi’s windscreen is smashed and it does not have headlights.
